Who is Leighton?
I am a thirty something Englishman whose pesky somethings seem to be accelerating faster than ever. I was born in Hammersmith, London, which means I’m a QPR fan. I didn’t have a say in the matter. I grew up in Buckinghamshire, went to military boarding school in Wales and later found myself drifting across Scotland at the beck and call of my father’s job. What am I gonna do with my life? I thought, again and and again. I had no clue, but loved the idea of getting away from this rainy island and discovering the world, one country at a time. “Congratulations!” said a woman called Laura one day, handing me a piece of paper that would change my life forever. I’ll never forget the day I became certified to teach English as a foreign language. Qatar… Slovakia… India… Belgium… China… The Netherlands… Cambodia… Spain… all countries I subsequently called home and places that served as springboards for further global adventures.
Writing has been in my soul since I was a kid and no matter where I went I always put pen to paper, finger to keyboard. I tried and failed to write a novel, completed a mediocre screenplay, knocked out countless album and film reviews. I never dreamt I could make a living out of it, but luckily a big bald Dutchman called Oscar thought differently. “Welcome to your weekly dose of Hollywood Buzz!” I cried and people seemed to think I said it well. From there I became a professional voice over and writer of movie, music and celebrity news. I penned a series of actor and director biographies and interviewed the likes of Jake Gyllenhaal, Steve Carell, Will Ferrell, Kaiser Chiefs and Kate Nash. For a while it looked like I’d stay in Amsterdam forever; but alas the domestic dream just wasn’t meant to be and after a tumultuous period of personal rediscovery, foreign shores began wooing me once again.
What is Leighton Literature?
So here I am as the aforementioned thirty something. I think I’ve lived a pretty interesting life, with lots of stories to tell. Tales I’ve decided to share on this site, colourful documents of the good, the bad and the ugly. Speaking of which, film and music continue to inspire me greatly. So you’ll find plenty of pop culture references peppered throughout my stories, as well as carefully selected theme songs for each instalment.
You can also check out my all-time cherished records in the ‘My Album Reviews’ section and see my top 5 photographs from different locations around the world. To answer the above question a little more succinctly, Leighton Literature is my life online. The places I’ve been, the things I’ve done, the people I’ve met and the stuff I’m passionate about. Whatever you choose to dip into you are very welcome, enjoy your stay!
