South East Asia is famed for some of the world’s most idyllic beaches and tropical islands. Those pining for pristine white sands, turquoise waters and breathtaking scenery usually flock to the overrated resorts of southern Thailand or the Indonesian party epicenter, Bali.
I guess everyone has different expectations and needs when it comes to a beach break. For me it’s always about the peace and quiet, finding a place in which I can rest, reflect and recharge. In lieu of binge-drinking, dancing and vomiting, I’m invariably looking for a place to sleep, read, write and talk one-on-one. It’s not always easy to find such places, especially in this modern age where it feels like the world is getting smaller and smaller with each passing year.
Cambodia’s little slice of beach heaven came for me with a visit to Koh Rong, a sizable island in the Gulf of Thailand about twenty five kilometers off the coast of Sihanoukville.
