When people ask me where I’m from I always answer with a resounding “London” because, well, that’s where I’m from. For people who are familiar with London, the follow-up question is always “Oh really, whereabouts?” Now while I’m actually from Hammersmith, recently I’ve had to stop myself from saying Tooting Bec.
This probably needs some explaining. Back in September 2015 I found myself at a loose end after finishing up a period of work and travel in Northern Spain. As if by magic, my old friend Henry got in touch to say that I could come and stay at his place in London for as long as it took me to figure out my next move. For me it was a great period of creativity and stabilization. I developed my blogging, explored the neighborhood, wrote some songs with Henry and set myself up with a teaching position in Cambodia.
Since then, every time I’ve returned from foreign adventures to reconnect with London, it’s to Tooting Bec I come. These days it feels like home, from the room at Henry’s and the green expanses of the common, to the local cafes, the excellent Indian food and the daily words of wisdom in the underground.
